Monday(ish) Movie: The International in the 50s

In the belated return of our video features, filmmaker Jeff Krulik mines the archives for news features on the Washington, DC International in the 1950s.  That great race — a precursor to the Breeders’ Cup — featured horses from all over the world, including (amazingly) the Soviet Union.  In these videos, I particularly noted a couple of things: the packed Laurel grandstand, back before it was enclosed in glass, and the old-school walk-up start to the race.

Thanks for this video. As a senior turf writer I think it’s a shame we forget the true greats so soon. Eddie Arcaro? He’s seldom mentioned anymore. I was fortunate as a young man to watch Eddie ride at Santa Anita Park. He was, without question, one of the greatest riders of all-time. A true Hall of Famer.

thanks for checking in, Warren. We’re a people of short memories, I think, so it’s nice to bring some of these back from time to time.
