What a great post, Frank. The evocations of history, the respectful and compassionate sensibility make it a pleasure to read. Thanks for writing it.

Thanks, folks. We ended up a late scratch after some in-gate excitement... we were one of two scratched at the gate, and a third horse was declared a non-starter. Nothin' like a buncha eager juveniles...

"this Rachel still has the high cruising speed but appears (so far) to be lacking the extra oomph"

Rachel never had an extra oomph. As a matter of fact her last furlongs were weak. She just look impressive because she was separating herself at the stretch against donkeys..er horseys that was dying worse than her. People should check her average last furlongs. The reason she does this because she is UNRATABLE and if my observation is correct, they tried to teach her how to rate this year.
BUT NO SUCCESS. Rachel will never win any 10 furlong races and therefore no 2010 classic for her.

It seemed I always stood next to the same guy at Rockingham who would yell out two numbers like the 6 and 7 all race in a loud and authoritive tone and when his horses faded and two other horses would finish 1st and 2nd, he would turn to the crowd and say, "I got it".

I always wanted inquire about the 6 and 7, but never had the gumption to do it.
