Homefire romps to maiden breaker

This time, Homefire left no doubt who was best.

The hard-luck filly, whose troubled trips cost her a couple of wins earlier in her career, jetted to the early lead, opened up a big advantage in the lane, and coasted to an easy three-length victory to break her maiden at Colonial Downs in front of a festive holiday crowd.

The daughter of Domestic Dispute opened up a two-length advantage after a quarter-mile in 22 4/5 seconds. Sent off at odds of 4-5, she led by a half-dozen at the eighth pole before jockey Horacio Karamanos geared her down late to earn the victory; running time for the 5 1/2 furlongs on the firm grass was 1:05 1/5.

Homefire now boasts a record of one win, two seconds, and a third from seven starts and has won or placed in four of five races.

Homefire overcomes troubled trip for second

Bad luck continued to dog four year-old Homefire yesterday at Colonial Downs, but she ran on gamely to take second in a maiden event going 5 1/2 furlongs on the outer turf.

Under jockey Horacio Karamanos, Homefire tracked the early speed duel from fifth, shot through along the rail to stalking position, and loomed a presence at the head of the lane. However, faltering pacesetter Dayin Dayout veered wildly in and out in front of her, cutting her off no fewer than three times. By the time Homefire got clear, eventual winner Ice Thumper was gone for a 1 3/4 length victory. Homefire earned second, more than two lengths clear of the rest of the field. Sent off as the second choice, she paid her backers $2.80 and $2.60 to place and show. Running time for the race was 1:04.71.

Homefire has finished second in two of three starts this year.

Homefire favored for Saturday tilt

Homefire, making her second start off a one-year layoff, is the 7-5 favorite in Saturday’s third race from Colonial Downs.

The four year-old daughter of Domestic Dispute has finished second and third in her last two starts. Most recently, at Pimlico, she overcame some traffic troubles to earn a solid second-place finish.

Saturday’s race, going 5 1/2 furlongs on the lawn, has a sizable field of 11 horses, each seeking to break her maiden. For the second consecutive time, Horacio Karamanos will ride.

Homefire grabs second in return

Three hundred seventy-eight days is a long time away from the races. But that’s how long Homefire had been off before yesterday’s third race from Pimlico.

The four year-old filly heartened her supporters to overcome a difficult trip and earn a second-place finish. Under jockey Horacio Karamanos, Homefire stalked the pace from fourth in the early going. She ran into trouble at the three-eighths pole when steadied behind horses. She bulled her way out to find running room, had to swing farther out when winner Fantastic Memories lugged in and sealed off a hole, then accelerated strongly once clear. Beaten less than two lengths, Homefire was more than three lengths ahead of the third-place finisher.

Homefire went postward as the 9-5 favorite.
